A method of facilitating the obtaining of a mucus sample from at least one lung of a subject comprises administering to at least one lung of the subject, in an amount effective to hydrate lung mucus secretions and/or stimulate cilia beat frequency therein, uridine 5'-triphosphate, an active analog thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of either thereof, and, optionally, concurrently administering to said at least one lung a physiologically acceptable salt in an amount effective to hydrate lung mucus secretions therein. A sputum or mucus sample is then collected from said at least one lung, which sample can then be analyzed for lung disease. Pharmaceutical compositions useful for carrying out the method comprise UTP or a salt thereof, alone or in combination with a physiologically acceptable salt, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of either thereof. The composition may be a liquid/liquid suspension composition or a dry powder composition.
Un procédé pour faciliter l'obtention d'un échantillon de mucus d'un ou des deux poumons d'un patient consiste à introduire dans un ou dans les deux poumons de ce patient, en quantité suffisante pour hydrater les sécrétions de mucus pulmonaire et/ou y stimuler la fréquence du battement ciliaire, de l'uridine 5'-triphosphate, un analogue actif de celle-ci ou un sel de ceux-ci acceptable sur le plan pharmaceutique. On peut également administrer de manière concomitante à un ou aux deux poumons un sel acceptable sur le plan physiologique en une quantité suffisante pour hydrater les sécrétions de mucus pulmonaire. Un échantillon de mucus (crachat) est recueilli du ou des poumons et cet échantillon peut être analysé pour diagnostiquer une maladie pulmonaire. Les compositions pharmaceutiques utiles pour mettre en oeuvre ce procédé contiennent de l'UTP ou un sel de celle-ci acceptable sur le plan pharmaceutique, seul ou en combinaison avec un sel acceptable sur le plan physiologique. La composition peut être une suspension liquide/liquide ou une poudre sèche.
