A recombinant, adenoviral vector is described, which still has the capability of autoreplication of the vector DNA after partial deletion of the E1 region, but can no longer form infectious virus particles. This vector can carry a transgenic DNA sequence for a therapeutically active gene and can be employed in somatic gene therapy, the transgene stability compared with vectors without the capability of autoreplication being significantly increased.
