An improved method of transliterating non-Latin input within an e-mail address field (52) to the Latin equivalent. A routine in a handheld device (4) is structured to detect a triggering event that indicates an e-mail address (60) is being input into an e-mail address field (52). Fol-lowing the triggering event, both prior and subsequent input is transliterat-ed to Latin characters as these characters are required by Internet proto-cols. The transliteration routine may also be utilized to search an e- mail address book wherein names are recorded using both Latin and non-Latin characters. Image
L'invention concerne un procédé amélioré de translittération d'une entrée non latine dans un champ d'adresse de courrier électronique (52) en léquivalent latin. Une routine dans un dispositif portable (4) est structurée pour détecter un événement de déclenchement qui indique qu'une adresse de courrier électronique (60) est entrée dans un champ d'adresse de courrier électronique (52). A la suite de l'événement de déclenchement, les deux entrées précédente et suivante sont translittérées en caractères latins étant donné que ces caractères sont nécessaires aux protocoles Internet.
