Deaerated bitumen froth is cleaned by separating contained bitumen from water and solids contaminants. The froth is countercurrently treated in a three stage circuit comprising primary and secondary inclined plate settlers ("IPS") and a cyclone. Naphtha diluent is added to each of the IPS stages and optionally to the cyclone stage. The combination of increasing diluent/bitumen ratio and separation force is applied to break down emulsion and separate the desired bitumen product from the contaminants.
