A method and apparatus for synthesizing at least one of alkylene oxides and alkylene glycols from lower alkanes and/or lower alkenes. In the preferred embodiment, the apparatus included a lower alkane/alkene supply; an oxygen supply for providing a source of oxygen; and a metal oxide catalytic reactor. The metal oxide catalytic reactor included a reactor chamber; and a catalyst in the chamber for reacting the lower alkane/alkene supply with the source of oxygen to convert the lower alkane/alkene by selective partial oxidation to at least one of the alkylene oxides and alkylene glycols. Also, in the preferred embodiment, a separator, downstream form the reactor, separated the alkylene oxides and alkylene glycols from the total product stream and the unconverted reactants.

Cette invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de synthèse d'au moins un des oxydes d'alkylène et des alkylènes glycols à partir d'alcanes inférieurs et/ou d'alkènes inférieurs. Dans le mode de réalisation préféré de cette invention, l'appareil comporte : une source d'alcane/d'alkène inférieur ; une alimentation en oxygène, servant à assurer une source d'oxygène ; et un réacteur catalytique à oxyde métallique. Ce réacteur catalytique à oxyde métallique comprend une chambre de réacteur ; et un catalyseur disposé dans la chambre afin de faire réagir la source d'alcane/d'alkène inférieur avec la source d'oxygène dans le but de convertir l'alcane/l'alkène inférieur, au moyen d'une oxydation partielle sélective, en au moins un oxyde d'alkylène ou un alkylène glycol. En outre, dans le mode de réalisation préféré, un séparateur, situé en aval par rapport au réacteur, sépare les oxydes d'alkylène et les alkylènes glycols de l'ensemble des distillats de récupération et des réactifs non convertis.
