An apparatus (fig. 1) and method for detecting a connection to a data transmission network functions by detecting the network signal energy on a network cable (figs. 2 and 3) while avoiding the problems of excessive power consumption and generation of excessive electrical noise. By monitoring the receive network lines and determining if there is electrical energy on the cable in the form particular to the type of network supported by the network adapter card, the host computing device can power-down the transceiver (20) associated with the network adapter card until an active network connection is detected.
L'invention concerne un appareil (fig. 1) et un procédé permettant de détecter une connexion à des fonctions de réseau de transmission de données par détection de l'énergie du signal du réseau sur un câble de réseau (figs. 2 et 3), tout en évitant les problèmes de consommation excessive d'énergie et de génération excessive de bruit d'origine électrique. En contrôlant les lignes du réseau de réception et en déterminant l'existence d'une énergie électrique dans le câble dans la forme particulière au type de réseau supporté par l'adaptateur de réseau, le dispositif informatique hôte peut mettre en veilleuse l'émetteur-récepteur (20) associé à l'adaptateur de réseau jusqu'à ce qu'une connexion de réseau active soit détectée.
