(57) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention concerns a method and apparatus for taking a sample from a moving material web. According to the invention, a slitting means (2) is moved to the edge area of the material web (6) for slitting the start end of a sample strip (4) from the material web (6); the start end of the sample strip (4) is guided to the surface of a, sampling roller (1) provided with a clamping means and placed next to the slitting means in the machine direction of the web (6); the sampling roller (1) is rotated to wind the sample strip (4) onto the sampling roller (1); the slitting means (2) is moved toward the center of web (6) in the cross direction of the web (6) in order to increase the width of the sample strip (4); and at the reach of the desired length of the sample strip (4), the slitting means (2.) is moved in the cross direction of the web (6) outside the web (6) in order to severe the sample strip (4). The approach in accordance with the invention allows the process variables of the web material to be measured at a high reliability. (Figure 1)
