Abstract of the Disclosure Aqueous sodium-methioninate solutions having a low, sodium carbonate content can be produced from the crude hydroly- sis mixtures obtained in the saponification of 5-(.beta.-methyl-merc- apto-ethyl)-hydantoin with 1.1 to 6 equivalents of sodium hydrox- ide and/or sodium carbonate in that the crude hydrolysis mixture is cooled to a temperature below 10°C, the crystallized sodium carbonate is separated and the remaining sodium-methioninate solution is concentrated to 40 to 65% by weight.
