Anode rods which are connected on their lower ends with the anodes for operation, for example in aluminum electrolysis in the dry way, and which after burning off of these anodes are to be re-used, must then be released from the metal cast jackets (cast iron jackets) still attached to their ends. For releasing these cast jackets from their anode rod ends, an apparatus is provided having a simple and reliable drive construction which is characterized by the following characteristics: at least one hollow shaft (12, 13) provided with outer gear teeth is rotatably mounted with a clamping ring (18, 19), in a housing (10), which ring is slidable on a respective cast jacket to be released by means of a lifting device (11); the rotatable hollow shaft (12, 13) has its outer gear teeth (14, 15) meshed with the correspondingly toothed rack surface of a double-action hydraulic piston (17); and by a corresponding hydraulic actuation, the hydraulic piston (17) is displaceable so as to rotate the hollow shaft and clamping ring s well as the corresponding cast jacket to be released for separation from its adhesive connection.
