A method and system for updating an archive of a computer file to reflect changes made to the file includes selecting one of a plurality of comparison methods as a preferred comparison method. The comparison methods include a first comparison method wherein the file is compared to an archive of the file and a second comparison method wherein a first set of tokens statistically representative of the file is computed and compared to a second set of tokens statistically representative of the archive of the file. The method further includes carrying out the preferred comparison method to generate indicia of differences between the file and the archive of the file for updating the archive of the file.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant de mettre à jour l'archivage d'un fichier informatique afin de reproduire les modifications effectuées dans ledit fichier. Le procédé consiste à sélectionner une pluralité de procédés de comparaison. Ces procédés de comparaison comprennent un premier procédé de comparaison selon lequel on compare un fichier à l'archivage dudit fichier, et un second procédé de comparaison selon lequel on calcule un premier ensemble de jetons statistiquement représentatifs du fichier et on le compare à un second ensemble de jetons statistiquement représentatifs de l'archivage du fichier. Le procédé consiste également à exécuter le procédé de comparaison préféré de façon à produire des index des différences entre le fichier et l'archivage du fichier de façon à mettre à jour ledit archivage.
