A drug screening method is provided wherein a chemical compound to be screened is incubated with a receptor-producing cell to generate a response in the cell. A referenced agonist is then added to the mixture to elicit a second response. The second response is then compared with the first response to categorize the chemical compound as either an agonist, antagonist or potentiator of the receptor.
