A growth medium for a plant having roots comprises an upper compression resistant layer and a lower root development layer. The upper compression resistant layer comprises a compression resistant mixture of discrete inorganic particles and solid rubber particles. The thickness and the amount of the solid rubber particles is sufficient to substantially absorb compressive loads which are applied to the top surface of the compression resistant layer. The compression resistant mixture has sufficient porosity to permit water to drain therethrough. The lower root development layer comprises a mixture of discrete. inorganic particles and organic material. The size of the discrete inorganic materials and the amount of organic matter are selected to allow the capillary flow of water in the mixture of discrete inorganic particles and organic material. The organic material has a size sufficiently large to remain in the mixture against the leaching action of water passing through the root development layer. The distance between the top surface of the growth medium and the lower root development layer is sufficiently small to enable the roots of a plant to reach the lower root development layer.
