The invention discloses a cerium oxide and zirconium oxide based composition and, optionally an yttrium, scandium or rare earth oxide, in an cerium zirconium atomic proportion of at least 1, characterised in that it has a specific area after 6 hour calcination at 900 ·C of at least 35m?2¿/g and an oxygen storage capacity at 400 ·C of at least 1.5ml of O¿2?/g. This composition is prepared by mixing, in a liquid medium, a cerium compound, a zirconium compound and, if necessary, an yttrium, scandium or rare earth compound; heating and calcining the resulting precipitate. The said mixture is prepared by using a zirconium solution such that the base amount required to reach the equivalent point during an acid-base titration of this solution verifies the mol ratio condition OH?-¿/Zr?1.65. The composition can be used in the manufacture of catalysts for motor vehicle post combustion.

La présente invention concerne une composition à base d'oxyde de cérium et d'oxyde de zirconium et, éventuellement d'un oxyde d'yttrium, de scandium ou de terre rare, dans une proportion atomique cérium/zirconium d'au moins 1 qui est caractérisée en ce qu'elle présente une surface spécifique après calcination 6 heures à 900 ~C d'au moins 35m2/g et une capacité de stockage de l'oxygène à 400 ~C d'au moins 1,5ml d'O2/g. Cette composition est préparée par mélange en milieu liquide d'un composé du cérium, d'un composé du zirconium et, le cas échéant, un composé d'yttrium, de scandium ou de terre rare; chauffage et calcination du précipité obtenu. On prépare le mélange précité en utilisant une solution de zirconium qui est telle que la quantité de base nécessaire pour atteindre le point équivalent lors d'un dosage acide-base de cette solution vérifie la condition rapport molaire OH-/Zr 1,65. La composition de l'invention peut être utilisée dans la fabrication de catalyseurs pour post combustion automobile.
