- 14 - Summary A surgical instrument for applying fasteners, especially for endoscopic purposes, comprises a handle, a shaft being attached to the handle, a driving means (48, 100) which is guided for longitudinal movement inside the shaft and which is coupled at its proximal end to an actuating member being accessible from the handle, a fastener magazine (54) for fasteners (78) which are straight before being applied, and a fastener tube (56) protruding from the fastener magazine (54), the distal end por- tion of the fastener tube (56) being curved. The fastener (86) to be applied is shifted from the fastener magazine (54) into the fastener tube (56) and pushed out of the distal end thereof by means of the driving means (48, 100). The fastener magazine (54) comprises a rotatable drum (64) which is biased by a spring (68). The fasteners (78) are arranged in the peripheral area of the drum (64), essentially parallel to the rotational axis. (Figure 5)
