When the user works at home on his home computer, a work monitor logs the file activities of all the drives of his home computer. The user may then ask for file synchronization, i.e. the files on the user's home computer are synchronized with the user's office computer, based on the information of the work monitor log. Preferably, the date and time of a file on the home computer are compared with the date and time of the corresponding file on the office computer to determine the direction of file synchronization. The newer version of the file overwrites the older version of the file on either the home or office computer. The file activities which are qualified for logging in the work monitor log are selectable as either read or write access to the files.

L'utilisateur peut alors demander la synchronisation des fichiers, c'est-à-dire que les fichiers stockés sur son ordinateur domestique soient synchronisés avec les fichiers correspondants stockés sur son ordinateur professionnel, et ce sur la base des informations contenues dans le journal d'activité du moniteur. De préférence, la date et l'heure d'un fichier de l'ordinateur domestique sont alors comparées à la date et à l'heure du fichier correspondant stocké sur l'ordinateur professionnel afin de déterminer le sens de la synchronisation des fichiers. La version la plus récente du fichier vient écraser l'ancienne version, soit sur l'ordinateur domestique soit sur l'ordinateur professionnel. Les activités réalisées sur des fichiers qui sont susceptibles d'être répertoriées dans le journal d'activité du moniteur peuvent être sélectionnées par l'utilisateur : il peut choisir d'accéder aux fichiers en mode lecture ou écriture.
