The present invention involves a motor system with bidirectional control and overload protection. The system comprises a main winding, an auxiliary winding, a capacitor, a switch, and an over-current protector. The auxiliary winding is connected in parallel to the main winding. The capacitor is coupled to the main and auxiliary windings. The switch is connected in parallel with the capacitor to control the direction of rotation of the motor. The protector is coupled to the main and auxiliary windings. The protector includes a main winding heater connected in series with the main winding, an auxiliary winding heater connected in series with the auxiliary winding, and a single contactor in series with the windings. The contactor is controlled by the heaters and interrupts the current flow through the windings when an over- current condition occurs.
