System for assessing the presence of gases and physical com- ponents in air, comprisinga number of different sensors, each sen- sitive to one or more different gases and/or physical components and each able to supply a signal varying with the concentration of the respective gases or physical components concerned, and means for processing the signals supplied by said sensors. Said process- ing means are embodied as a neural network to which the sensors are connected, in which all sensor signals are combined into one single output value, which network is adapted and programmed during a learning period in which the output value obtained for predeter- mined air samples is repeatedly compared with a similar value sup- plied by a reference panel of trained human beings or animals for the same air samples until both values are within a predetermined margin identical.
