A hydrophobically- or hydrophilically- functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane has the following formula: (see above formula) where each R, which can be the same or different, independently represents a linear, branched or cyclic organic group selected from the group consisting of hydrophobic alkyl groups, hydrophobic aryl groups, hydrophobic arylalkyl groups, hydrophobic cycloaliphatic groups, and hydrophilic organic moieties, provided that at least one of the R groups is a wax-like aliphatic group.
