ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE It is known to use electrochemical cells to measure the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere. Such cells in the past have employed an aqueous electrolyte system. Such aqueous electrolyte systems are subject to either loss or uptake of water over the test period leading to inaccurate results. The present invention seeks to overcome this drawback by providing an improve- ment in an electrochemical gas detector for measuring traces of a component of a gas mixture, comprising two electrodes in an organic electrolyte, a circuit between and in contact with said electrodes to permit current flow through the electrolyte and the circuit, said circuit including measuring means responsive to the current flow, and means for contacting the gas mixture with the electrolyte and past one of the electrodes for changing of the electrochemical equilibrium at said one of the electrodes for generation of an electrical current in the circuit, the improvement which comprises said electrolyte being an anhydrous organic gel.
