A side activated clamping mechanism (235) for detachably connecting a tool unit (210) to a tool suport housing (237). The tool unit (210) has a shank (216) with openings which are engaged by locking elements (257a, b) extending radially from apertures (255a, b) in a canister (239) mounted within the tool support housing (237). Mechanical advantage of the locking elements (257a, b) may be increased by angling the locking element contact surfaces (230, 276) relative to one another. The locking elements (257a, b) are driven along a ball track (263) on a reciprocating lock rod (260). To accommodate the angle between the contact surfaces (230, 276), the ball track (263) must be angled.
