ABSTRACT A culture zone (A') within a cell culture tank (A) is partially provided with a zone (B) isolated by a filter 8 adapted to be permeable for culture broth and protein produced by cells being cultivated. An injec- tion nozzle 6 associated with an oxygen or air supply conduit is provided in a bottom of said zone (B), a stirring vane 3 of a high r.p.m. is provided immediate- ly above said injection nozzle and 30 to 50 % of said filter's height is exposed to a gas phase area within the cell culture tank. A conduit/nozzle assembly 7 is provided immediately below the fluid level within the zone (B) for collection of culture broth. A stirring vane of a low r.p.m. is provided within the culture zone (A'). There are provided an exhaust conduit 20 and a germ-free pressurized vent conduit 21 both opening into the gas phase area within the culture zone (A') and on-off valves are associated with the oxygen supply conduit associated with the injection nozzle 6, the exhaust conduit 20 and the conduit for pressurization with germ-free air 21, respectively, so that the fluid level within the zone (B) having been lowered due to foam generated within the zone (B) can be raised, said foam within the zone (B) can be expelled out through the filter into the cell culture tank (A) and thus a 24 desirable defoaming effect can be obtained controlla- bly operating said conduits and said on-off valves associated therewith. The defoaming effect within the zone (B) may be enhanced by providing the top of said zone (B) with windows and providing a defoaming vane of a high r.p.m. above the fluid level within said zone (B).
