Disclosed is a water-soluble extract obtained from Pittosporaceae and effective for the treatment for diabetes and liver complaints, which mainly contains vitamin B12, vitamin B2, saponin and tannin and which exhibits the following characteristic absorption in the infrared region of the spectrum: strong absorption bands at 1050 - 1070 cm-1, 1620 cm-1, 2950 cm-1 and 3450 cm-1; and relatively strong absorption bands at 520 cm-1, 780 cm-1, 1250 cm-1, 1320 cm-1, 1380 - 1440 cm-1 (doublet), 1735 cm-1 and 2850 cm-1. Further disclosed is a process for preparing the above-mentioned water-soluble extract, the process comprising the steps of: separating a mixture of dry powder of Pittosporaceae and water into the two layers of a solution layer and a precipitate layer by leaving the mixture as it is; removing the precipitate layer; concentrating the solution layer under reduced pressure at low temperatures of not more than about 40°C to prepare a concentrated solution; and freeze-drying the concentrated solution to prepare powder as occasion demands.
