ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A railway rail and fastening assembly comprising first and second railway rails (1) arranged end-to-end, first and second joint bars (4) connecting the rails (1) together, each joint bar (4) having a ledge portion (4d) running along an edge thereof adjacent to the rail feet (1a), and four rail fastening arrangements (6), one pair on either side of the rails, is proposed in which each rail fastening arrangement (6) comprises retaining means (7) extending upwardly alongside the rail foot (1a) and having a passage (7a) therein for receiving a leg portion of a fastening device, a member (8) having a first portion (8a) with its lower surface in contact with an upper surface part (7a) of the retaining means (7) and a second portion (8b) extending from the said first portion (8a) towards an adjacent one of said rails (1) and having an end part (8c) which bears down on the ledge portion (4d) of the joint bar (4) adjacent thereto, and a fastening device (9) which is formed from a metal rod so as to have a first leg portion (9a) which is substantially straight, and is located within the passage (7b) of said retaining means (7), a second leg portion (9b) which curves towards and then away from said first leg portion, and a connecting portion (9c), which is a reverse bend, serving to join together respective ends of the leg portions, which leg portions (9a, 9b) have a spacing between them which has a minimum value (d) at an intermediate location (9d) therealong, all portions (9a, 9b, 9c) of the device (9) lying substantially in a common plane, and the second leg portion (9b) thereof bearing down, at said intermediate location (9d) therealong, on an upper surface of said member (8), thereby to secure said member (8).
