A self contained breathing apparatus (10, 130) includes a pressure vessel (12) which holds a supply of breathing air. The pressure vessel is in fluid communication through a first stage pressure regulator (22) with a second stage breathing regulator (40). The breathing regulator is operatively connected to a face mask (42) which is worn by a user. When the pressure available in the supply is at a suitable pressure pressure regulator (22) provides pressure to breathing regulator (40) at a first pressure. When the pressure in the supply falls to a value indicative of impending depletion of the air supply, a transfer piston (94) in a step up valve (24) shifts. A change in condition of the step up valve causes a step up piston (127) to increase the output pressure from regulator (22). This increased pressure moves a sensing piston (60) and causes indicating devices (68, 78) in an alarm circuit (64) to be activated. In alternative embodiments, an electronic alarm module (132) is used to provide indications of the impending depletion of the air supply.
