ABSTRACT The invention relates to storage-stable solutions of carbonated magnesium methylate of the formula Mg(CH3O)2 (CO2)n in methanol and processes for their preparation by reacting metallic magnesium with methanol and CO2 or reacting magnesium methylate in methanol with CO2. The magnesium content of the solution is 0.1 to 8% by weight, based on the total solution, and the CO2 content n is 1 to 2.2. The solutions according to the invention are used, inter alia, for the preservation of paper or for the preparation of catalysts for the polymerization of olefins. They show an excellent storage stability, in that no discolouration, precipitation or gel formation occurs over long periods of time.
