A highly thermally conductive but yet highly conformable composition (1) is made from gel filled with alumina. The use of .alpha.-alumina in which at least 10 weight % of the .alpha.-alumina particles have a particle size of at least 74 µm makes possible the high filler levels needed to attain high thermal conductivity, without causing the decrease in elongation and softness normally associated with high filler levels. Further improvements are observed if the .alpha.-alumina and the gel (or precursor thereof) are mixed with a specific energy input of at least 10 Joule/g. The input of such specific energy has the effect making the resulting composition more conformable than it otherwise would be. The composition may be internally supported by a flexible matrix such as an open-celled foam (2) or a fabric (3).
L'invention porte sur une composition (1) à forte conductivité thermique mais néanmoins très malléable consistant en un gel chargé d'alumine. En utilisant de l'alumine .alpha. dans laquelle au moins 10 % en poids des particules d'alumine .alpha. ont une taille d'au moins 74 µm, on atteint les niveaux élevés de charge requis pour obtenir une forte conductivité thermique, sans occasionner les diminutions d'allongement et de souplesse qui accompagnent habituellement les niveaux élevés de charge. D'autres améliorations apparaissent lorsque l'alumine .alpha. et le gel (ou son précurseur) sont mélangés avec un apport spécifique d'énergie d'au moins 10 Joule/g. Cet apport d'énergie rend la composition résultante plus malléable qu'elle le serait sinon. La composition peut recevoir un support interne consistant en une matrice souple par exemple de mousse (2) à cellules ouvertes, ou de toile (3).
