This invention pertains to an apparatus for coupling electromagnetic energy to electrodeless lamps. A waveguide (20) having one end connected to a source of electromagnetic radiation (23) was closed at the second opposite end (18). A coupling device at the second end (18) couples microwave energy from the waveguide (20) to an electrodeless lamp (11). The coupling device includes a coaxial transmission line (12) having a center conductor (15) extending through one of the walls of the waveguide (20) adjacent the second end (18). An alcove partition (27) within the waveguide (20) contacts the extending conductor (15) and forms an alcove (19) in the waveguide (20). The alcove portion (19) provides for an impedance matching structure between the transmission line (12) and waveguide (20). The electrodeless lamp (11) which is positioned above the free end of the coaxial transmission line (12) is excited with the coupled microwave energy.
L'invention concerne un dispositif servant à coupler une énergie électromagnétique à des lampes sans électrodes. Un guide d'ondes (20), dont une extrémité est reliée à une source de rayonnement électromagnétique (23), a été fermé au niveau de la deuxième extrémité opposée (18). Un dispositif de couplage au niveau de la deuxième extrémité (18) couple l'énergie micro-ondes depuis le guide d'ondes (20) vers une lampe sans électrodes (11). Le dispositif de couplage comprend une ligne de transmission coaxiale (12) possédnt un conducteur central (15) s'étendant à travers une des parois du guide d'ondes (20) en position contiguë à la deuxième extrémité (18). Une cloison de renfoncement (27) à l'intérieur du guide d'ondes (20) vient en contact avec le conducteur (15) et forme un renfoncement (19) dans le guide d'ondes (20). Ce renfoncement (19) constitue une structure d'adaptation d'impédance entre la ligne de transmission (12) et le guide d'ondes (20). La lampe sans électrodes (11), qui est placée au-dessus de l'extrémité libre de la ligne de transmission coaxiale (12), est excitée par l'énergie micro-ondes couplée.
