ABSTRACT Detection of Certain Molecules A mammalian cell line having an inheritable genetic element comprising a TNF, IL-1.alpha. or IL-1.beta. promoter and, under transcriptional control thereof, a coding region, wherein the promoter controls transcription of the coding region in response to the exposure of the said cell line to a pyrogen and the said coding region encodes a reporter polypeptide The cell line is used as the basis of an assay. The promoter is preferably the human interleukin-1.alpha. or -1.beta. promoter, the cell line is preferably human monocyte derived, and the reporter polypeptide may be .beta.-galactosidase, .alpha.-galactosidase, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase, luciferase or phosphatase.
