A method for controlling an echo suppressor with echo control function, able to be switched on or off, in a telecommunication system, preferably a DECT system, whereby an answering tone is detected in transmitting and/or receiving direction and when the answering tone, in particular a 2,100 Hz signal typical for modem / fax connections is recognized, the echo control function is switched off, is characterized in that for recognition of the answering tone, a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is used which preferably comprises a Goertzel algorithm. The presence of a non-speech connection can thereby be recognized particularly quickly and reliably and the echo control function can immediately be switched off.
