A method for analyzing a labeled biological sample includes the steps of: acquiring a digital image of the sample; locating a circular plate containing the background and the labeled sample; locating a region of interest containing the sample; locating the sample within the region of interest; selecting a region of the sample; selecting a background region; computing a centroid based on the relative optical intensities of the two selected regions; and comparing the centroid with a predetermined threshold value.
