A catalyst for purifying exhaust gases includes a substrate, and projections. The substrate is provided with straight-flow gas-flow passages. The projections protrude from the straight-flow gas-flow passages in a height of 50 Êm or more, and include a precipitate, which is composed of at least one catalytic ingredient selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals.
