During import of images into an existing document, for each selected image, the present invention creates a low resolution thumbnail preview image that is displayed in or with the cursor and moves about the existing document with the cursor according to the movement of the mouse. A crosshair cursor is also displayed, indicating to the user that clicking and dragging will stark the definition of a bounding rectangle of the image when it is actually placed into the existing document.
