The present invention provides an adsorbent filtration media comprising crushed mollusk shell particles having coated thereon a layer of iron oxide. A method for preparing the adsorbent filtration media, as well as a method of purifying a solution using the adsorbent filtration media is also provided. The use of the shell particles results in the adsorbent media inheriting at least some of the antibacterial, antiviral and ancillary healing properties of the shells. Additionally, the nature of the shell particles provides for a material that has an expansive surface area, and therefore, is able to inherently filter suspended solids from solution, as well as relatively tightly bind a substantial amount of the iron oxide coating.
