Abstract of the Disclosure Spectrophotometric apparatus for measuring continuously the total heating value of a gaseous fuel is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a radiant energy source and a radiant energy transmission system for transmitting radiant energy in a predetermined wavelength range. At least two cells are provided, one containing the gaseous fuel and the other containing a gas of known composition. The transmission system can be adjusted to direct radiant energy through each of the cells in turn. A detector receives the radiant energy emitting from the cells and passes it to a signal processor. A synchronizer is connected to the signal processor to indicate to the processor the wavelength being transmitted and the cell being illuminated at any time. The signal processor employs intensity information from the detector perta? ing to the amount of radiant energy absorbed by tile fuel to compute the heating value.
