A method for directly oxidising sulphur compounds into elementary sulphur and/or sulphates at a temperature of less than 200 ·C is disclosed, which comprises using a supported catalyst with a catalytically active phase containing copper, the copper being present in an amount of at least 2 % by weight based on the catalyst component and at least 15 % by weight based on the total amount of components of the catalytically active phase. Such a catalyst provides for a high conversion of H¿2?S while minimising conversion into SO¿2?.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'oxydation directe des composés soufrés en soufre élémentaire et/ou en sulfates à température inférieure à 200 ~C, dans lequel on utilise un catalyseur supporté dont la phase catalytiquement active comprend du cuivre, l'élément cuivre étant présent dans une teneur d'au moins 2 % en poids par rapport au catalyseur et d'au moins 15 % en poids par rapport à la somme des éléments de la phase catalytiquement active. L'utilisation d'un catalyseur de ce type assure une conversion élevée de l'H2S tout en minimisant la conversion en SO2.
