A device for converting pictures or images into electronic signals comprises a camera (14) having a first lens (1) for recording pictures or images present on a projection area (10), and a light source (16) having a second lens (3) for focusing the light beams onto the projection area (10). Optionally, both lenses are designed as motor-adjustable zoom lenses, preferably at least the first lens being designed as a motor-adjustable zoom lens. At least one mirror (22) which is mounted on a support arm (24) - optionally pivotably about a joint (24a) - and is arranged between the projection area (10) and the two lenses (1, 3) is provided for deflecting the two beam paths coordinated with the camera and the light source. The relative position of the mirror (22) on the support arm (24) is variable, with the result that the beam path lengths are shortened or lengthened. The adjustment of the relative position and optionally also the swivelling of the mirror (22) are effected by means of motors and optionally under remote control by a control unit (30) coordinated with the device. A position transmitter for registering the respective support arm length and optionally a shaft encoder (35) for registering the respective angle of rotation are provided and deliver corresponding signals to the control unit (30).
