Methods of characterizing subsurface conditions in a selected geographic region (14) previously associated as a whole with a specific subsurface material characteristic reference profile such as from a USDA-NRCS soil survey. The method includes deploying a sensing tool (18,20) at selected positions (44) within the geographic region to determine a depth-referenced subsurface material characteristic such as soil type or strata, comparing the determined subsurface material characteristic to the subsurface material characteristic reference profile associated with the geographic region (14) to determine a correlation between the subsurface material characteristic reference profile and the depth-referenced subsurface material characteristic, and then deciding whether to deploy the tool at another position (44), and at what optimum position to deploy the tool, by considering the correlation.

L'invention porte sur des procédés de caractérisation de l'état subsurfacique d'une région géographique sélectionnée (14), antérieurement associée dans son ensemble au profil de référence spécifique des caractéristiques des matériaux subsurfaciques tels que le relevé USDA-NRCS des sols. Ledit procédé consiste: à déployer un équipement de détection (18, 20) en divers points sélectionnés de la région géographique (14); à déterminer les caractéristiques du matériau subsurfacique en fonction de la profondeur par exemple du sol ou des strates; et à comparer les caractéristiques déterminées du matériau subsurfacique avec les caractéristiques du profil de référence du matériau subsurfacique associé à la région géographique (14) afin de déterminer une corrélation entre le profil de référence des caractéristiques du matériau subsurfacique et les caractéristiques dudit matériau, en fonction de la profondeur, et de décider du déploiement de l'outil en autre point (44) et en quel point optimal en fonction de la corrélation.
