(57) Abstract In winding a paper or cardboard web (1) separated by longitudinal cuts on winding spindles it is known to hold each winding roll (3) during winding by two guide heads (5) in- serted into both sides of the winding spindle, the guide heads (5) supporting as least part of the roll weight. According to the invention, the winding rolls (3) are supported beneath their centres of gravity at the latest from a winding roll diameter of 1000 mm in such a way that the load applied by the roll weight on the two guide heads does not exceed 15000 Newtons per metre of roll width. In order to reduce the roll weight bearing on the guide heads (5) by means of overpressure generated by compressed air, in a winding machine of the invention, there are sealing components (25, 27, 29, 30, 35, 42, 44, 45) beneath a winding roll which form beneath the centre of gravity of the roll a pressure chamber which is closed at the top by the underside of the winding roll (3) and can be adapted to different roll widths and po- sitions.
