ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A continuously operating mining machine (1 ) having a drum-shaped cutting element (2) is used to extract coal or other minerals in an open-cast mine. This machine removes mineral slices (18) of approximately rectangular cross section, the width of the cross section being approximately equal to the width of the cutting drum (2), and the height of the cross section being no more than about half the diameter of the cutting drum. The mining machine (1) is connected by a conveyor belt system (8, 9) with a loading car (12) which discharges onto an advanceable bench conveyor (13). A rectangular section of mine is developed as follows in the manner according to the invention: A mineral slice (18) is removed by the cutting drum (2) of the mining machine (18) as the latter travels, starting at one of the short sides of the workings, then moving along the long side and ending at the opposite short side of the workings. On both short sides, this slice ends in an curved section (19) in the form of an eighth or a quarter arc of a circle and in each case it forms a ramp surface (20). These ramp surfaces (20) are created by raising or lowering the cutting drum (2). In order to obtain a terraced edge slope (141 of the open-cast mine, a large number of mineral slices (18) are removed as the mining machine (1) is shifted sideways in stages. Once the edge slope (14) of the open-cast mine has been created, the mineral blocks (16) in the workings are extracted layer by layer, starting from the development trench (15) which is formed.
