The invention pertains to a process for producing iron oxide-containing pellets wherein fine ore particles are agglomerated in the presence of an inorganic and/or organic binder and a binder additive which serves to improve the preheat strength of the pellets. The binder additive can be a boron- containing compound or calcium fluoride. The invention is particularly suitable for organic binders, such as carboxymethyl cellulose. A preferred binder additive is sodium borate.
