Autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, are treated by conducting lymphocytapheresis in a series of treatments until the peripheral blood lymphocyte count has been reduced to less than 500 cells/µl and preferably to less than 300 cells/µl and thereafter continuing such treatments while administering immunosuppressive compounds such as azathioprine at about 2.5 mg/Kg per day and prednisone at about 15 mg per day sufficient to maintain the PBL count at less than 500 cells/µl and preferably less than 300 cells/µl.
