The invention provides hapten derivatives of formula Image I wherein R1 is a saturated or unsaturated straight or branched hydrocarbon of 1-15 carbon atoms when R2 is COR3 or NHR3, or 2-15 carbon atoms when R2 is SR3 or OR3, and R3 is a group X or LX wherein X is a labeling or immunogenic carrier group and L is a linker arm through which X is bound, that are useful for the preparation of antigenic, antibody and label reagents having superior performance characteristics for use in immunoassays for the detection of d-propoxyphene and d-nor-propoxyphene.
