ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A switched reluctance motor has a stator assembly with an annular yoke and inwardly directed stator poles. A rotor assembly within the yoke includes rotor elements with which the stator poles register simultaneously and repeatedly with each complete rotation of the motor shaft supporting the rotor assembly. The stator poles are arranged in sets of two or more poles, each surrounded by a single elongate, ring-like, planar coil. In each pole set, the circumferentially extreme pair of stator poles are shaped to define a pair of parallel surfaces that engage opposite ends of the coils. The stator yoke also defines a pair of internal flat coplanar surfaces associated with each pole set. These yoke surface seat the opposite ends of the coil associated with the pole set. The axial lengths and relative spacing of the stator poles are such that the material content of each coil is reduced compared to conventional multiple coils individually wound on individual poles. -13-
