A Direct Memory Access circuit moves data in and out of processor memories. The ATM support circuit can attach or detach ATM headers to a block of user data which is sent as the payload data of the ATM cell. In addition, the circuit supports AAL5 cells, generating ATM cells based from a block of user data, or generating a block of data from received AAL5 ATM cells.
