2050351 9010001 PCTABS00002 Disclosed is a process for the preparation of stilbene compounds such as bis(2-benzoxazolyl) stilbenes by reacting a stilbenedicarboxylate such as dimethyl-4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate with an o-aminophenol in an organic solvent such as chloronaphthalene in the presence of a catalytic amount of a tin or titanium compound. The reaction is typically carried out at a temperature of about 200-250·C and a preferred catalyst is either dibutyl tin oxide or titanium tetra-alkoxide.
