A portable electronic apparatus is provided with a housing containing electronic circuits including a circuit necessary for the infrared communication function. On the side surfaces of the housing, a plurality of infrared emitting/receiving elements are provided in in different directions. The portable electronic apparatus is further provided with a selector which selects at least one infrared emitting/receiving element from the infrared emitting/receiving elements according to a selection signal so as to provide an electrical connection between the selected infrared emitting/receiving element and the circuit contained in the housing.
