The invention comprises a method and apparatus for reducing uncertainty in timing on the network. The uncertainty in receive buffers is removed by time stamping the arriving packets before sending the packets to the receive buffer. The uncertainty in the transmission buffer is removed by giving the packets a timestamp in the future, and holding the packets until precisely that time. Time precision is ensured by only releasing time packets at the host physical layer to network boundary at the time specified within the packet.

La présente invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant de réduire l'incertitude de temporisation dans le réseau. On élimine l'incertitude des tampons de réception en marquant le temps sur les paquets arrivants avant de les envoyer au tampon de réception. On élimine l'incertitude du tampon d'émission en donnant aux paquets une marque d'horodatage dans le futur et en les retenant jusqu'à ce moment très précis. La précision temporelle est assurée uniquement par la libération des paquets temps au niveau de la couche physique hôte vers les limites du réseau au moment spécifié à l'intérieur du paquet.
