The invention is a flashlight (100) that utilizes a light source (2) and a light homogenizer in the form of either a light pipe (4) or a lenslet array (14, 16). The flashlight is capable of generating a light beam (B) that forms a uniformized light distribution (6) at a selectable distance (D) from the flashlight. The distance at which the uniformized light distribution is formed is selectable by adjusting an adjustable imaging lens (5). Where the light source is an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (200), a switch (220) can be used to change the state of the LED array to create a variety of different types of light beams, each of which provides relatively uniform and bright illumination at a selectable distance from the flashlight.
