A thermostat with an energy measurement or calculation mechanism suitable for use with a line powered electric device or apparatus. According to an embodiment, the thermostat includes a switch, a controller and a sensing circuit. The switch is coupled between a power supply line and output line for powering the electric device and operatively connected to the controller. The thermostat includes a temperature sensing component and the controller operates the switch to power the electric device to achieve the desired temperature. The controller operates the sensing circuit to take voltage and/or current measurement which are then used to calculate power consumption and energy consumption values for the operation of the device.
