2121836 9309076 PCTABS00022 A method for introducing one or two radioactive iodine isotopes into the 3-position or 3,5-positions of the .alpha.-ring of an iodo thyronine compound, an iodo thyronamine compound or a thyro carboxylic acid, comprising the preparation of a corresponding thyronine derivative which has (a) substituent(s) in the 3-position or 3,5-positions of the .alpha.-ring exchangeable(s) for radio iodine and a melting point below 180 ·C, preferably below 145 ·C, the exchange of said substituents for one or two radioactive iodine isotopes being carried out essentially in the absence of solvents at temperatures in the vicinity of or above the melting point of said compound. Such a method is particularly advantageous when using as a starting compound a thyronine derivative containing one or two bromine atom(s) in the .alpha.-ring which is (are) exchangeable for an iodine nuclide.
